Department Chair of Performing Arts
This marks Kelly Shepard's 15th year at Milken. This also marks his 10th year as Department Chair of the Performing Arts.
Mr. Shepard hails from Richmond, Indiana, where he began singing and performing at an early age. (His high school wrestling aspirations gave way to a leading role in The Sound of Music!) He has sung professionally for 15 years and his experiences range from performing at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia, to singing in civic and professional operas and musical productions. His current passion involves singing in the 2010 SPEBSQSA International Barbershop Quartet, Catcher Block. Mr. Shepard holds a Bachelor
of Music Education (with High Distinction) from the Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington.
Mr. Shepard became involved in the Zamir Foundation in 2004. This organization promotes and performs Jewish Choral Music in major cities across the United States, Canada, and Europe. The foundation is lead by creator and conductor Mati Lazar, a leading choral conductor in Israel and the United States. Mr. Shepard’s award-winning Concert Choir traveled to New York in February of 2005 to participate in the HaZamir Festival, a teen branch of Zamir, uniting Jewish teens from around the world to gather and perform Jewish choral music. This
culminated in a performance at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center. This year, the group will perform in Baltimore and on the prestigious Carnegie Hall stage!
Since coming to Milken, Mr. Shepard has served as Musical Director and Conductor for Anything Goes, Once Upon a Mattress, Little Shop of Horrors, Leader of the Pack, Bye Bye Birdie, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Damn Yankees, Guys and Dolls, Animal Farm, Seussical, Wizard of Oz, Little Shop of Horrors (again!) Sweeney Todd, WORKING, and this coming year - Beauty And The Beast.
He also teaches Kol Echad, Vocal Repertoire, Beginning Voice I & II, MS Performing Arts Exploratory, and MS Jazz Ensemble - a MS Center of Excellence.
Mr. Shepard lives in Lake Balboa with his wife, Naomi, their budding performer daughters, Sydney and Lindsay, and their numerous pets.
