melody_mansfield.jpgBefore coming to Milken in 1998, Ms. Mansfield taught both lower and upper division courses at California State University, Northridge, Pierce College, and Moorpark College. She studied Comparative Literature at Scripps College in Claremont, and holds both Bachelor’s and a Master’s degrees in English from California State University, Northridge. Additionally, she has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Writing from Vermont College of Norwich University.

Ms. Mansfield's fiction, essays, and poetry have appeared in a variety of literary, academic, and commercial publications including The Rectangle, Pedestal, Ascent, Thought Magazine, Inside English, and Parent's Magazine. Her first novel, The Life Stone of Singing Bird, was published by Faber and Faber in 1996 to favorable reviews from The New York Times Book Review, Booklist, and others.  In May 2007, Ms. Mansfield was honored to be chosen as the featured writer interviewed in Bibliobuffet.com. In March of 2008, Ms. Mansfield presented her technique for Student Led Discussions to fellow educators at the conference for California Association of Independent Schools; in Spring 2008 her article on same was published in the CAIS journal.

The building of a fully actualized Creative Writing program at Milken has long been one of Ms. Mansfield's most cherished goals.  Thanks to the wonderful support of the Milken administration and the unflagging enthusiasm of Milken students, the program gets bigger and better each year.  It now includes two UC-approved courses, a print journal, a creative writing club, a guest author series, and an online interactive website.

Ms. Mansfield is married to fellow writer and college professor, Jerry Mansfield. She has two grown daughters, and is the very grateful grandmother of twin grandsons.
